Las Vegas-based ventriloquist and comedian April Brucker is taking audiences backstage in her latest streaming special, April Backstage, which launches in August on UncagedTV UK.
The comedy special blends mockumentary and live performance formats, offering a satirical look at backstage chaos as Brucker prepares her towel-juggling routine – TJGL – for a Vegas show.
Behind The Curtain With Puppets And Personalities
The storyline revolves around Brucker attempting to rehearse while surrounded by a dysfunctional mix of puppet characters and stage personalities. Set in her dressing room, the special explores the mayhem that erupts as each puppet demands the spotlight, while a cast of eccentric figures adds to the confusion.
These include a washed-up lounge singer in emotional disarray, a psychic of questionable qualifications, two ex-presidents at odds, and a mobster disguised as a magician. The chaos is punctuated by Brucker’s onstage mother offering unsolicited advice.
The 60-minute comedy is described as a mix of slapstick, satire and backstage absurdity. It draws from Brucker’s career in ventriloquism and theatre, as well as her experiences as a Las Vegas performer.
Known For Mixing Comedy With The Surreal
Brucker has built a career around unconventional comedy. She gained attention through a viral appearance on My Strange Addiction (Paramount+), where she discussed her relationship with her puppets. Since then, she has featured on Judge Jerry (NBC), Inside Edition and ABC’s Videos After Dark with Bob Saget, where she debuted her TJGL routine.
“April Backstage” follows that trajectory with exaggerated characters and backstage tension replacing the traditional stage format.
Brucker has also authored a book and performed a Vegas residency. She first came into wider public view after a story in the UK Daily Mail reported that she left her fiancé to focus on her puppets.
Streaming In August
The special will stream throughout August on UncagedTV UK. The trailer (above) provides a preview of the surreal ensemble and comedic style that underpins the show.
The production does not follow a traditional stand-up model, instead focusing on character-driven chaos behind the curtain of a Vegas comedy act.
While the humour leans toward the absurd, it also comments on performance anxiety, creative process and the pressures of keeping an audience entertained—even when the show hasn’t started.
