Melbourne’s live performance scene is about to get physical

The hybrid cabaret and competitive event that pits burlesque performers against each other in arm wrestling bouts, is heading back to The 86 on Smith Street in Fitzroy on Sunday, June 7.
The event is the brainchild of Ruby Slippers, a cabaret wrestling MC based in Naarm, who will host and produce the night.
A unique format
The concept is straightforward. Burlesque performers face off in one-on-one arm wrestling matches, blending the theatrics and choreography of burlesque with genuine physical competition.
“It does what it says on the packet,” Ruby Slippers explained.
“Burlesque Arm Wrestling is exactly that – an event that combines the glamour, seduction and showboating of arm wrestling with the sweat, endurance and showboating of burlesque.”
The format has run before at The 86, with Ruby Slippers describing a previous instalment as chaotic in the best possible way.
“The last one was an absolute riot,” Ruby Slippers remarked.
The June contenders
Four performers have been confirmed for the June bout.
Pomme De Terror, Mae B Wilde, Gia Saphique and Strawberry Siren will each take to the stage and the arm wrestling table in a bid for bragging rights.
Several of the contenders are alumni of Maison Burlesque, a Melbourne-based burlesque school and performance collective, while others are established names in Australian burlesque and striptease.
Ruby Slippers described the lineup as a mix of familiar faces and crowd favourites.
“It’s some Maison alumni and some icons of Australian burlesque and striptease,” the MC outlined.
Tickets and pricing
Doors open at 5:00pm with the first show and battle kicking off at 6:30pm (AUS Eastern Standard Time).
Tickets are available online through Sticky Tickets.
A single general admission ticket is priced at $22, while a table booking costs $99 and includes entry for up to four people with reserved seating near the stage.
Ticket prices do not include the Sticky Tickets booking fee and may vary slightly depending on the payment method selected at checkout.
Door sales will be available from 5:00pm on the night, but only if the event has not sold out beforehand. Walk-up pricing is $29 for a single entry, $120 for a table and $40 for an upgrade to an unreserved table.
Bottomless drinks on offer
A bottomless drinks package is available for purchase at the bar on the night for $49 per person.
The package includes Aperol Spritzes, Mimosas in orange, pineapple and apple varieties, peach puree Bellinis, sparkling wine and red and white wines.
Venue and seating
The 86 is located at 185 Smith Street in Fitzroy.
Entry is general admission with limited seating allocated on a first-come, first-served basis. Those who want guaranteed reserved seating are encouraged to book a table package.
The event is restricted to attendees aged 18 and over.
A safe space policy
The venue has made clear that the event operates under a zero-tolerance policy.
The 86 will not accept any sexist, homophobic or racially offensive behaviour during the performance.
The management of The 86 has also asked all guests to acknowledge the traditional land owners on which the venue stands, the Wurundjeri people of the Kulin nations.
No refunds
Organisers have advised that all bookings are final. Attendees are urged to check the date and time of their order before purchasing, as no refunds will be offered.
Speculation is rife
There are no official words yet on speculation that Arm Wrestling GOAT, Devon Larratt, will make an appearance as guest referee but we suspect he’d come if asked. Betting odds have also not been announced but looking at the guns on Pomme, we make her the early favourite.
