San Francisco rock and roll veterans the Flamin’ Groovies have confirmed a series of live dates this autumn to celebrate the 50th anniversary of their album and single Shake Some Action.
The record, which has become one of the defining releases of the power pop genre, was originally released in 1976 and has continued to influence musicians and bands in the decades since.
Rolling Stone Magazine once described the Flamin’ Groovies as “the greatest rock and roll band to ever come out of San Francisco.”
From San Francisco To The World
The Flamin’ Groovies were formed in San Francisco in 1965 by Cyril Jordan and Roy Loney. The band’s early output produced three albums that would go on to shape the direction of American rock music: Supersnazz, Flamingo and Teenage Head.
Loney departed the group in 1971, and was replaced by Chris Wilson. The lineup change marked a shift in the band’s sound, steering them toward a style that blended British Invasion influences with raw rock energy.
Between 1976 and 1979, the Wilson-era Groovies released a run of three albums – Shake Some Action, Flamin’ Groovies Now and Jumpin’ In The Night – that cemented the band’s reputation on both sides of the Atlantic.
A Concert That Helped Launch Punk
In 1976, the Flamin’ Groovies headlined the Roundhouse in London with support from The Ramones and The Stranglers. The concert has since been cited as one of the key events that helped spark the punk rock movement in the UK.
The significance of that particular show has only grown over time, with music historians pointing to the convergence of those three acts on one bill as a pivotal moment for the genre.
A Lasting Catalogue
The Teenage Head album was included in the 2006 book 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die, further underscoring the band’s place in rock history.
