Newcastle (the Australian one) venue Bartholomew’s is preparing to reopen its doors on 19 June with The Ball, a five-hour immersive experience that blends live performance, roving artists and interactive installations across the King Street space.
The event, which runs from 6:30pm to midnight, does away with the conventional stage-and-audience format. Instead, performers will emerge from the crowd, with live musicians carrying the energy through the space and encounters unfolding in different corners of the venue throughout the evening.
No Stage, No Separation
The concept behind The Ball draws on Victorian grandeur, the aesthetics of period drama and gothic literary influences. Organisers describe a space transformed by candlelight, movement and curated detail, where costuming, lighting and sound design work together to build an atmosphere across multiple rooms and areas.
Attendees will receive a map on arrival to navigate the evening’s various experiences, which include a fortune teller cove, interactive installations and roaming characters.
Tickets include a five-hour premium food and beverage package.
The Lineup
The event has assembled a lineup of performers from across the Newcastle and broader Australian performance circuit.
Bettie Bang Bang takes on the role of Host of Formalities for the evening. Described as blending vintage glamour with sharp wit, she will guide attendees through the experience as it shifts and evolves across the night.
Court, of Court & Co., returns to Newcastle following appearances on Sydney Showboats and two Newcastle Fringe award wins. Known for a style of movement that leans into drama and elegance, Court will deliver a performance created specifically for The Ball.
Aerial duo Sarah Booker and Killian Denecker will provide what organisers are billing as the evening’s aerial feature, combining movement and spectacle in a performance designed to blur the line between the real and the theatrical.
Nick Gurr, performing as Baltah of Avid Entertainment, has been confirmed as a headliner, bringing musical direction to the event. He is known for performing at large-scale events across the Hunter region.
Roving Performers And Hidden Corners
Porcelain Alice, a performer familiar to Newcastle audiences, will bring a roving presence to the evening, moving through the space rather than being confined to a set performance area.
Bon Binary, credited as one of the DJs behind the Newcastle Art Gallery launch, will handle part of the evening’s musical programming. Organisers point to an instinct for reading a room’s energy as a defining characteristic of the artist’s approach.
Natalya Alessi rounds out the headliner list. Rather than delivering a conventional set, Alessi will drift through the crowd over the course of the evening, weaving between candlelight and conversation as part of the broader immersive experience.
Haus of Fury also features on the performance bill.
Supporting Hunter Breast Cancer Foundation
The Ball has partnered with the Hunter Breast Cancer Foundation as a charity beneficiary for the event, positioning the evening as one with a community focus alongside its entertainment offering.
